The round white target area in the base is regulation hole size. As the ball approaches it rolls onto the ultra thin green base. If the path of the ball misses the target area then the ball simply carries on past it on its original path. However if the ball enters the target area from any direction it lifts a flap and gets trapped inside - just like a real hole.
